Halloween

Halloween in my favorite holiday, and this was my first year not Trick or Treating. That didn't mean I didn't get to have some fun!

On the 17th, Nick and I went to the Oak's Park Scaregrounds. Our friend Marvin works there, and we got a pretty good coupon through him. I'd never been to a haunted house before, but it was a lot of fun! When Nick and I got there, at around 9:30pm, it was pretty busy. Oak's Park was milling with couples, families, scare actors, and a disproportionate number of tweens (the scariest thing we saw there). I dressed as a vampire and we wandered until we found Marvin. A Zombie noticed we weren't sure where we were going and led us to Marvin who was working as a Creepy Clown. He led us through his haunted house, and then we followed him around the fairgrounds. We only had time to go on one ride before they closed at 10, so we went on the Mary-Go-Round (my favorite!) Then, the next day, I went to the pumpkin patch with my family and Aaron, Wendy, and Thyme. I picked out a big tall pumpkin, and got some really good apple cider... yum!

Also recently, during Fall Break, I went on a little autumnal adventure with Nick, my friend Moto, and Suzanne. It was the first day we'd had any significant rain, so Moto wanted to drive up to Multnomah Falls to see how it was doing. The initial plan was to simply drive up to Multnomah falls, look at it, and head back to Portland. But, of course, that's not what happened. Moto is a force of nature, and we always end up on an adventure with him. This time we stopped at multiple waterfalls along the gorge, went on a (very short) hike, visited Bonneville Dam, and finally grabbed dinner in Hood River. While it was a lot of fun, by the time we reached the restaurant we were cold, hungry, and damp. We felt very out of place in the slightly fancy Mexican restaurant. We were a gaggle of wet teenagers, surrounded by people on dates and notably, a family dinner after a funeral. We learned this because partly through our dinner, some of the staff went over the the large group behind us with a sparkly hot pink sombrero and a dessert on a fancy plate. They had thought it was a birthday celebration, not a funeral. The mourning family took it very well, and took the dessert too. I hope it brightened up their night a little and gave them something to laugh about.

My pumpkin! :D

The Friday before Halloween was Mom's birthday, and we went out to lunch at the Old Spaghetti Factory and carved our pumpkins. Because it was the day before halloween I had been wearing a makeshift dog costume. Mom, in solidarity, dug out a pair of leopard ears from the costume bin and fashioned the tie of Suzanne's bath robe into a very fashionable scarf. She tried to get Suzanne to wear a pair of lamb ears -- Why do we own so many animal ears? -- but Suzanne took them off before getting out of the car. That evening I watched Halloween (1978) with my friends. I had never seen it before, and while I am not the biggest fan of horror I can see why it is a classic!

Halloween itself was pretty fun! Nick and I dressed up as a bed bug and guy in old timey pajamas. We hung out at Soup Club for a few hours, which was a lot busier than anticipated considering it was Halloween. The soup of the week was apple cider (not a soup, in my opinion), and it was pretty good. It was more of an extremely watery apple sauce than an actual cider, but still warm and spiced and delicious. And I made Pillsbury Halloween cookies! After that we went to a drag show hosted in the Student Union, and that was a ton of fun! A couple of my friends were in it, and everyone did a great job! Most notably there was a Game Changer meets Saw skit that was a lot of fun. While I haven't seen any of the Saw movies, I am a huge fan of the Dropout TV gameshow Game Changer. After that we watched a few of the Bob's Burgers Halloween episodes in my dorm and went to bed.

My cookies!
