Autumn at Reed

A young woman with blue hair sits sideways in a red Adirondack chair, wearing a blue sweater and long white skirt. She has a book open on her lap and is staring up at the camera. The photo is a selfie taken in .5
This morning I ate my breakfast
and read The Golden Ass out on
the Great Lawn

It's finally October! While I wouldn't say I have a favorite month, October may be up there. It's when the leaves start to turn, the air gets crisper, and of course... Halloween! My favorite holiday.

It certainly feels like autumn here at Reed, with fall leaves starting to cover the Great Lawn, if only it weren't so darn hot!! For the last week or so we've had highs in the 80s. It's awful, I just want to wear cute sweaters and long skirts but instead I'm still stuck with my summer wardrobe.

One of the most wholesome Reed clubs I've found is Soup Club. Started by a couple of boys in my dorm-hall, it's just a group of freshman who meet up every weekend to cook and eat soup, bread, and sometimes dessert. There's an open invitation to anyone who wants to grab a bowl, and it's just a good vibe. This coming week I'm planning on making carmel apples for dessert. There's one boy in my door who always sits in the main common room by the front door. He is always there because it's an easy way for him to socialize and make friends, but during Soup Club he put up a sign to tell people where he was, and invite them to join. I think it's really cute!

The sign that he made. It says "Out to
Soup Club 4N. potential freind [sic]"

Bread from Soup Club. A loaf of sourdough bought from the Woodstock Farmer's market earlier that day, a baguette from Grand Central (brought by me!), and a loaf of bread I think was homemade. All with Kerrygold butter.

I have also really been enjoying my classes. They are hard, and there is way too much homework (especially readings), but that's what I wanted!! So far in Hum 110 we've read Gilgamesh, Genesis, Lucretius's De Rerum Natura, Herodotus's The Histories, and just started The Golden Ass. They are all very interesting, and we've had many interesting lectures and conversations, but I definitely have favorites:

The Epic of Gilgamesh: Pretty easy to read, and pretty fun. Boring at some parts, but over all I would recommend it to others. Also just a very historically important work (although I suppose they all are, that's why we're reading them). Looses points because I hated writing my Hum paper about Gilgamesh, but that may just have been because the prompt sucked.

Genesis, from The Jewish Study Bible: Maybe my favorite. I hadn't read the bible yet, and there were lots of fun and interesting stories in it. Some parts are sickening or very sad. The story of Jacob and his wives Rachael and Leah makes me especially sad. Overall pretty easy to read as well. I am writing my next Hum paper about Genesis, specifically about Husband-Wife relationships.

Lucretius: I hated this. Didn't even get through most of the reading TBH. Some of my classmates liked it, so I'm sure it has some value. But this was it's first year on the Hum 110 syllabus in like five years, so clearly we can do without it.

Herodotus: I liked this! Parts were definitely boring, but it's easy to skim over the parts that are him describing the make-up of an army in detail and just focus on the interesting stories. Had a lot of interesting stuff about dreams and oracles, and many crazy stories! It was also cool to read about Ancient Egypt from a contemporary perspective.

My friends and I went to Hong Phat and bought way
too many canned coffees and Thai Iced Tea.
