Birthday Party

Making a wish.

Lily's gift to Elizabeth included a very funny, clever puppet show about Harry Potter that had been uploaded to YouTube. Here are the children watching the video. Look at Elizabeth's face. Obviously, Lily chose a great gift.

Elizabeth showing off the beautiful necklace she got from Uncle Scott. Suzanne is either asleep or drunk on chocolate.

Preparing for the Party

At King's Cross, the witches wait for the Hogwart's Express.
Our bedroom, transformed into the Gryffindor common room. (Use your imagination!)

Elizabeth drew this house elf herself, based on a tracing of Suzanne's actual body (because Elizabeth thinks Suzanne is the size of a house elf). It was for a game of Pin the Sock on Dobby (aka Free Dobby), which everyone had fun with but, unfortunately, Elizabeth and Suzanne won. It was kind of embarassing to hand the two door prizes to our own kids ... maybe we could have handled it better. Elizabeth also handily won the Guess the Number of Jellybeans in the Jar Challenge, but we awarded the prize to the first runner up, who wasn't a member of the family.

Spider Girl

Mark used to spider-man down the hall in the apartment we lived in when I was younger than Elizabeth. Seems to come naturally to her.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is a big deal in Elizabeth's school, due to the Mandarin immersion program. At a recent celebration at the school I got the girls these dresses. I think they look awesome, but I hadn't thought about how one cleans them. Eh, no matter. I'm sure they'll stay clean.

Birthday Prep

Elizabeth is about to turn 8. She wants a Harry Potter themed birthday party, and Barb is having fun preparing for it.

For those of you unfamiliar with the stories, Barb here is playing wanted criminal Sirius Black.

Elizabeth and Grandma

Elizabeth had cooled toward Grandma after her baby-era infatuation. Nowadays, Suzanne is the one who loves Grandma to pieces. But last Sunday when we visited, Elizabeth really wanted to explain MINECRAFT to Grandma. Elizabeth had three books that helped to explain. Grandma was tolerant, but probably was having flashbacks to when I was trying to explain to her the awesomeness of Dungeons and Dragons back in 1981.

Last Gasp of Summer

Sunset the first night.   It's been a good summer, but certainly more constrained than usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic...
